JOB TITLE: Associate Paintings Conservator (F/T, Long Island City, NY)

DUTIES:

Design and execute treatments of paintings with an emphasis on modern and contemporary art;
Perform detailed examination of the materials, structure, and condition of paintings; Assess
deterioration and damage, and potential complications involved in treatment; Provide written and
photographic documentation to record condition of objects, treatments proposed, and treatments
performed; Determine accurate estimates for treatment time as an input for proposals; Manage
and work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines; Work and cooperate with other
conservators and technicians as well as work on projects independently; Provide clients with
advice on transport, handling and display requirements; Ability to make decisions based on the
latest state-of- the-art in conservation and on theoretical and analytical knowledge.
Description

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in Art Conservation or related and three (3) years
experience as a paintings conservator in a private practice. Prior experience must include three (3)
years of experience: Working in a private practice performing hands-on conservation of
contemporary artworks; Performing treatment of paintings with emphasis on modern and
contemporary works of art; Working with materials and techniques used in conservation practices.
Specific examples include: thread by thread re-weaving, air brushes, and in-painting on
monochromatic and matte finishes; Examining works of art, providing condition reports, treatment
proposals and final treatment reports in written and photographic form; Calculating accurate
treatment time estimates; Fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry; Domestic travel:
approximately 3-4 weeks per year; International travel: approximately 3-4 weeks per year
